Camaguey
558 kilometres from Havana and 326 km from Santiago de Cuba, the city of Camagüey is the third most important in Cuba. The city, capital of Camagüey Province, the largest in Cuba, has beaches to the north and south, such as Santa Lucía, very near the most important coral reef in the Antilles. From Hostel Camaguey Plaza, travellers will be able to immerse themselves in its history and traditions. Its strategic location places travellers in the centre of the island, very near the beaches, with the chance to explore both ends of the island of Cuba.
With its narrow side streets and its colonial buildings, Camagüey was founded in 1514 under the name of Santa María del Puerto del Príncipe. But the constant pirates’ attacks caused it to be refounded inland, at its current location. Considered a National Monument, the hidden streets in the historic centre remind us of the pirates and invaders age: its layout is like a maze and many of the streets finish in confusing junctions or cul de sacs.
